Wright Sites: A Guide to Frank Lloyd Wright Public Places

Frank Lloyd Wright's groundbreaking designs, innovative construction techniques, and inviting interiors continue to astound and inspire generations of architects and nonarchitects alike. The only comprehensive collection of Wright-designed buildings open to the public in the United States and Japan, Wright Sites has been revised and expanded to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the architect's birth in June 1867. The fourth edition of our best-selling guidebook contains twenty new sites, updated site descriptions and access information, and, for the first time, color photographs. It also includes itineraries for Wright road trips, a list of archives, and a selected bibliography.

The introduction, revised for this edition, is by Jack Quinan, a founding member of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and author of Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House.

Carlo Scarpa

The work of Carlo Scarpa challenged, and continues to challenge, accepted notions of modern architecture.

While several books have been published on his work, none has approached the breadth and depth of this monograph by Robert McCarter, who is celebrated for his meticulously researched, experientially based, and jargon-free accounts of key figures in modern architecture.

This book is the definitive study of Scarpa's many accomplishments, including such works at the Canova Museum, the Castelvecchio Museum and the Brion Cemetery, among others.

Review

"Scarpa's career and working practices have been comprehensively researched and documented in Robert McCarter's new monograph for Phaidon Press... McCarter's carefully layered, first-hand narratives offer a rich evocation of each building project."—Disegno Daily

"...Illustrated with a handsome selection of sketches, plans and photographs... [Robert McCarter is] an engaging guide..."—Apollo

"In this substantial volume, McCarter leads us by the hand through Scarpa's achievements. He gives us a survey that is both vast, and in the spirit of Scarpa, meticulously detailed."—Curated Object

"With 350 images and drawings, Carlo Scarpa documents the architect's dramatic modernism - the sweeping red staircase of his Banca Popolare in Verona, his sleek concrete-and-wood Olivetti showroom in Venice - even as it celebrates his poetic vision?"—ELLE Decor

Zaha Hadid: Early Paintings and Drawings

The impact of visionary Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid (1950–2016) upon contemporary architecture cannot be overstated. Among her many talents, Hadid was also an accomplished artist and highly skilled calligrapher, influenced by the Russian avant-garde (Malevich, Tatlin and Rodchenko).

This concise, beautifully designed catalog, with its die-cut cover that pays homage to her unique formal vocabulary, presents a large selection of her rarely seen paintings, drawings (including calligraphy drawings which would later be transformed into architecture), notebooks and visionary digital visual work, all of which echo the lightness and weightlessness of her buildings. Many of Hadid’s early paintings pre-empt the potential of digital and virtual reality. These works, which date from the 1970s to the early 1990s, reveal her as an architect with drawing at the very heart of her work.

Eames

The creative duo Charles Eames (1907–1978) and Ray Kaiser Eames (1912–1988) transformed the visual character of America. Though best known for their furniture, the husband and wife team were also forerunners in architecture, textile design, photography, and film.

The Eames’ work defined a new, multifunctional modernity, exemplary for its integration of craft and design, as well as for the use of modern materials, notably plywood and plastics. The Eames Lounge Chair Wood, designed with molded plywood technology, became a defining furniture piece of the twentieth century, while the couple’s contribution to the Case Study Houses project not only made inventive use of industrial materials but also developed an adaptable floor plan of multipurpose spaces which would become a hallmark of postwar modern architecture.

From the couple’s earliest furniture experiments to their seminal short film Powers of Ten, this book covers all the aspects of the illustrious Eames repertoire and its revolutionary impact on middle-class American living.

New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham's Jazz Age Architecture

Of all the world's great cities, perhaps none is so defined by its Art Deco architecture as New York. Lively and informative, New York Art Deco leads readers step-by-step past the monuments of the 1920s and 30s that recast New York as the world's modern metropolis.

Anthony W. Robins, New York's best-known Art Deco guide, includes an introductory essay describing the Art Deco phenomenon, followed by eleven walking tour itineraries in Manhattan each accompanied by a map designed by legendary New York cartographer John Tauranac and a survey of Deco sites across the four other boroughs.

Also included is a photo gallery of sixteen color plates by nationally acclaimed Art Deco photographer Randy Juster. In New York Art Deco, Robins has distilled thirty years' worth of experience into a guidebook for all to enjoy at their own pace.

Gardens of the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes

Before it was restored, the High Line was an untouched, abandoned landscape overgrown with wildflowers. Today it is much more than that; it’s a central plaza, a cultural center, a walkway, and a green retreat in a bustling city that is free for all to enjoy. But above all else, it is a beautiful, dynamic garden with plantings designed by Piet Oudolf, one of the world’s most extraordinary garden designers. Gardens of the High Line, by Piet Oudolf and Rick Darke, offers an in-depth view into the planting designs, plant palette, and maintenance of this landmark achievement. It reveals a four-season garden that is filled with native and exotic plants, drought-tolerant perennials, and grasses that thrive and spread. It also offers inspiration and advice to home gardeners and garden designers looking to recreate its iconic, naturalistic style. Featuring stunning photographs by Rick Darke and an introduction by Robert Hammond, the founder of the Friends of the High Line, this large-trim, photo-driven book is a must-have for anyone who appreciates the nature of design.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Unpacking the Archive

Unpacking Wright’s archive of more than two million objects, on the 150th anniversary of the master architect’s birth. Published for a major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this catalog reveals new perspectives on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, a designer so prolific and familiar as to nearly preclude critical reexamination. Structured as a series of inquiries into the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives at Taliesin West, Arizona (recently acquired by MoMA and Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, Columbia University), the book is a collection of scholarly explorations rather than an attempt to construct a master narrative. Each chapter centers on a key object from the archive that an invited author has “unpacked”― tracing its meanings and connections, and juxtaposing it with other works from the archive, from MoMA, or from outside collections. Wright’s quest to build a mile-high skyscraper reveals him to be one of the earliest celebrity architects, using television, press relations and other forms of mass media to advance his own self-crafted image. A little-known project for a Rosenwald School for African-American children, together with other projects that engage Japanese and Native American culture, ask provocative questions about Wright’s positions on race and cultural identity. Still other investigations engage the architect’s lifelong dedication to affordable and do-it-yourself housing, as well as the ecological systems, both social and environmental, that informed his approach to cities, landscapes and even ornament. The publication aims to open up Wright’s work to questions, interrogations and debates, and to highlight interpretations by contemporary scholars, both established Wright experts and others considering this iconic figure from new and illuminating perspectives
