New Forms: Architecture in the 1990s

 new formsArchitecture Book Description

New Forms
Architecture in the 1990s
In the 1990s architecture has evolved considerably despite economic constraints. The new architecture has been guided by the rapid progress of computer assisted design and a newly rediscovered affinity for the arts. Indeed, many architects - from France's Dominique Perrault, creator of the new Bibliothèque Nationale de France, to Japan's Tadao Ando - explain their work in terms of references to minimalism or land art. At the same time art itself has veered towards installations and works which approach architecture. These influences have enriched and diversified contemporary architecture in the developed world.

About The Architect

Jean Nouvel (born August 12, 1945) is a French architect. Nouvel studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a founding member of Mars 1976 and Syndicat de l'Architecture

He has obtained a number of prestigious distinctions over the course of his career, including the Aga Khan Award for ArchitectureInstitut du Monde Arabe which Nouvel designed), the Wolf Prize in Arts in 2005 and the Pritzker Prize in 2008. A number of museums and architectural centres have presented retrospectives of his work.

Nouvel was awarded the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour, in 2008, for his work on more than 200 projects, among them, in the words of The New York Times, the "exotically louvered" Arab World Institute, the bullet-shaped and "candy-colored" Torre Agbar in Barcelona, the "muscular" Guthrie TheaterMusée du quai Branly (2006) and the Philharmonie de Paris (a "trip into the unknown" c. 2012). ~wiki

with its cantilevered bridge in Minneapolis, and in Paris, the "defiant, mysterious and wildly eccentric"Pritzker points to several more major works: in Europe, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art (1994), the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne (2000), the Opéra Nouvel in Lyon (1993) , Expo 2002 in Switzerland and, under construction, the Copenhagen Concert Hall and the courthouse in Nantes (2000); as well as two tall towers in planning in North America, Tour Verre in New York City and a cancelled condominium tower in Los Angeles read more on wiki

Frank Lloyd Wright, 1867-1959: Building for Democracy (Taschen Basic Architecture)

Widely thought to be the greatest American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was a true pioneer, both artistically and technically. At a time when reinforced concrete and steel were considered industrial building materials, Wright boldly made use of them to build private homes. His prairie house concept—that of a low, sprawling home based upon a simple L or T figure—was the driving force behind some of his most famous houses and became a model for rural architecture across America. Wright’s designs for office and public buildings were equally groundbreaking and unique.

From Fallingwater to New York’s Guggenheim Museum, his works are among the most famous in the history of architecture. read more on wiki

About The Architect

Richard Meier (born October 12, 1934) is an American architect, whose rationalist buildings make prominent use of the color white.

The entire span of Meier's career, right up to his most recent designs for New York and Shenzhen, is included in this exceptional volume, created in close collaboration between the architect, the author, and the eminent graphic designer Massimo Vignelli. This spectacular monograph displays Meier's work in unprecedented size and brilliance, and features a preface by the noted Spanish architect Alberto Campo BaezaHis work also reflects the influences of other designers such as Mies Van der Rohe and, in some instances, Frank Lloyd Wright and Luis Barragán. White has been used in many architectural landmark buildings throughout history, including cathedrals and the white-washed villages of the Mediterranean region, in Spain, southern Italy and Greece. read more on wiki
