The Serpentine
Gallery have announced that the Swiss architect duo Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese designer and artist Ai Weiwei are to create the 2012
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. It will be the 12th pavilion in a yearly
series commissioned by the gallery, where the structure is used as a
public space in London’s Hyde Park, as well as a venue to host talks and
events.
The gallery chooses architects who have never built in the UK, so
it will be the team’s first collaborative project in the country.
Architects who have previously had the honour include Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry, and most recently fellow Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. Dami Babalola -Editorial
Herzog & de Meuron Architekten, BSA/SIA/ETH (HdM) is a Swiss architecture firm, founded and headquartered in Basel, Switzerland in 1978. The careers of founders and senior partners Jacques Herzog (born 19 April 1950), and Pierre de Meuron (born 8 May 1950), closely paralleled one another, with both attending the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich. They are perhaps best known for their conversion of the giant Bankside Power Station in London to the new home of the Tate Modern. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have been visiting professors at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design since 1994 and professors at ETH Zürich since 1999.
In 2001, Herzog & de Meuron were awarded the Pritzker Prize, the highest of honours in architecture. Jury chairman J. Carter Brown commented, "One is hard put to think of any architects in history that have addressed the integument of architecture with greater imagination and virtuosity." This was in reference to HdM's innovative use of exterior materials and treatments, such as silkscreened glass. The Tate Modern in London made Herzog & Meuron famous all over the world. The projects and structures they have built since then are distinguished by the sensitive treatment of materials for which the architects are renowned. In addition, these Pritzker Prize winning architects have developed a topographical conception of architecture that not only locates their designs in a larger context but also frequently structures them as landscapes. In order to represent them, the layout of volume 4 of the complete works has been completely redesigned. The publication contains essays by the architects themselves in which they situate their projects. The structures presented include such icons of contemporary architecture as the Prada store in Tokyo Aoyama and the Allianz Arena in Munich, where the opening game of the 2006 Soccer World Cup was played. Pathbreaking museum structures such as the Schaulager near Basel, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the De Young Museum in San Francisco continue the conversation surrounding what constitutes a truly contemporary presentation of modern art.
